Crayon Melt Technique (Envelopes)

Getting those crayons for the Crayon Shavings project inspired us to do more crayon-y projects! Here's a very easy technique for decorating paper. We used to do this as kids. It's basically melting the crayon over a candle frame and using the dripping wax to make a design. We put our design on a cardboard to make some letter envelopes! Try  this out with a grade-schooler. Just be careful about the open flame!

So you'll need crayons, a candle (and match/lighter) to heat that baby up, and a cardboard. To make the envelope you'll need glue and scissors.

Simply hold that candle over the flame for a second and then put the drippings onto the surface you want to decorate!

We splattered the crayons on two boards. Doing it once just wasn't enough!

Here are close up shots of the colors used for each board:
Yellow, dark orange, green

Red, white, and blue

Envelope 1
Claire made the envelope for the yellow-orange-green board.

The board was in "portrait" layout. She folded it upwards, leaving about two inches of space, then cut out some flaps at the sides. Sticking the flaps together gives the envelope. Just trim the top flap and voila, the envelope was done!

Envelope 2
Jade had a much more elaborate idea. She got a piece of colored paper to be used to decorate the inside of the envelope. Getting a template of an envelope online, she printed it onto colored paper.

Afterwards she cut out the template and stuck it onto the back part of the cardboard (the one without the crayon drippings). Make sure to stick it so that the part with the text that shows how to fold the envelope is facing down on the cardboard.

Cut along the edges of the colored paper so that the cardboard has the same shape, too. Glue the flaps and fold the top flap of the envelope.

As an added decor, use one of those scissors with a fancy blade to cut the top flap. So that you'll have a design.

There you have it, two custom-made envelopes designed using melted crayons! I bet they don't sell these at a stationery shop!
